What is IGMP?

IGMP Snooping is a very common yet advanced option which is enabled by default on the Luma network. IGMP Snooping is the process of listening to Internet Group Management Protocol network traffic. When enabled, IGMP Snooping monitors IGMP communication among devices and optimizes wireless multicast traffic. The Luma router will act as a mailman for multicast traffic. Luma will decide which device will receive the applicable multicast traffic. While the Luma router continues to act as a mailman, it will improve network speed by ensuring the multicast traffic won't flood the network.

What if you have little to no multicast traffic on the network? Then the simple answer would be to disable IGMP Snooping. One of the most commonly reported problems is that the Apple streaming function does not work when you stream with Airplay from a device such as iPhone, iPad, or Mac. It is safe to say you should generally leave the IGMP Snooping option as disabled if you experience such an issue with mirroring functions or other type of multicast traffic related issue.
